Bass transcription: Kings of Leon – “Revelry”
The third single from Kings of Leon’s massive-selling fourth album, Only by the Night (2008), “Revelry” didn’t match the chart success of the previous hits “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody”, but it still features some intricate, melodic bass playing from Jared Followill:

“Song Title” bass performance notes
- The first verse features the guitar playing various ‘flavours’ of E major chords – adding the bass notes in the second verse gives our ears the full chord progession of E – F#m – G#m – F#m
- The chorus features the same chord progression, but the bass plays a motif based on E major pentatonic that helps to tie the section together
- It sounds to me like there’s delay being applied to the bass during the second verse, which is not a common bass effect, so I’ve notated the resulting rhythms as closely as possible on the basis that most readers won’t want to rush out and by a pedal for one section of one song.
