Groove Of The Week #7: The O’Jays – ‘For The Love Of Money’

Anthony Jackson’s plectrum and phaser part on the O’Jay’s classic hit ‘For The Love Of Money’ is one of the most recognisable funk lines in history, and provides undeniable proof that you can use a pick and still groove.

“Should I use pick or fingers?” Is a question that I hear frequently from bassists. Many players feel that using a pick should be confined to certain genres (rock, punk and metal in particular), or that using a pick somehow makes you a less authentic bassist.

The answer, ultimately, should be about the tone that you’re trying to achieve rather than what you’re most comfortable with. The music, rather than the technique itself should always be the deciding factor.
